I've never had a lot on my plate at any one time, but I'm actually to the point in my life of having regularly scheduled monthly events! The pink is mine. The majority of it is David, who is teal. So really it's not a ton, but it's regularly scheduled stuff! Plus it's just fun playing with calendars.
I'm off to Wyoming for a family reunion tomorrow through Sunday. It is were my mom grew up, but not me. Hopefully I'll get some good pictures along the way and maybe find a little fun somewhere.

This seriously cannot come out soon enough. I'm totally excited for all the extras. This was released at Comicon.
Uh... R.I.P part two?

If you dial (503) 265-XXXX you will get the direct line to my desk. If you dial (530) 265-XXXX you will get Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in California.
I always feel a little awkward and sad when I have to say "Sorry but you dialed the wrong number." when someone says "Hi this is Bob Smith... I'm calling in relation to John Smith who you have at your mortuary."
It happened twice yesterday.

Caro: A whole french press died because of me today.
Derke: aww
Caro: yes, it was sad. and curse words were said over the body.
Derke: is there a funeral planned?
Caro: unfortunately, no. The family preferred immediate interrment in the trash can. He would have wanted it that way.
Derke: I would have sent flowers
Caro: We would prefer donations of coffee beans made to the food bank under the name Pierre.
Derke: I got nothin'
Caro: That was AWESOME.
Derke: yes, yes it was lol
Caro: If I had a blog, it would totally go up there.
Derke: I totally just logged into my blog lol
I didn't log in to post that, but the timing was so beautiful I had to. What I originally logged in to say is that no blog content has come to mind in a while. My facebook has been a constant buzz since RYLA, and David and I went to a Rotaract (Rotary for 18-30 y/o's) meeting last night. It was a lot of fun seeing people, and it's going to be a blast getting involved with them.
I'm being sacrilegious tonight and skipping out on a raid for the second time this week to hang out with RL friends. Warcraft is loosing it's appeal. I love some of the people I play with but lately the guild is being overshadowed by a few elitist drama queens who spawn more negatively than I care for. Monday's raid was downright abysmal and quit early because of the princesses' attitudes. Rather then tell them to STFU, do their job, and fix their attitude they are ruling and controlling the raids by spreading a negative attitude and not participating unless they get what they want. It ruins the game and i refuse to raid with that sort of individual.

I attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Award conference as a good way to earn brownie points with work and gain some technical knowledge on being a young person in business.
What I got was far, far different. I've met a group of amazing people who I hope to keep as lifelong contacts. I've come to learn about parts of myself that had gone dormant or otherwise inactive. I have a responsibility and a need to use what I've got to better something else.
It truly was a conference that created leaders out of the capacities of a great group of people.

I'm afraid once again I am not participating in 12 of 12 this month. I'm currently at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards for the week and won't be back until Friday. Even if I could take a good 12 pictures for the day it'd be crazy long before I had the opportunity to post them.
I'm sure I'll have some pictures of the stuff I do there when I get back.
Hating Business Law, pt. 3

"Which of the following is the EPA not empowered to do under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)?
A. Develop standards for management of hazardous waste by those who generate them. B. Develop standards for management of hazardous waste by those who transport them. C. Rank U.S. hazardous waste sites based upon severity of risk. D. Establish standards for the construction and operation of hazardous waste treatment facilities."
My Answer I answered D, because nowhere in the 1,000 questions I did before this question was anything about construction standards for hazardous waste treatment mentioned on this topic. The other three I recognized.
The Correct Answer "Under RCRA the EPA is empowered to develop standards for management of hazardous waste by those who either generate or transport them. Also under this Act, the EPA has power to establish stnadards for the construction and operation of hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities. The EPA has the power to rank U.S. hazardous waste site based upon severity of risk under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), also known as Superfund."
I got it wrong, because I naturally eliminate the the answer I had never seen before. Unfortunately, One of the things the EPA is responsiblity falls under a different act then the one questioned. Which is more important, what act tells the EPA what specific thing it can do or the umbrella responsibilities associated with the EPA? The point of understanding should be the capacities and responsibilities of the EPA, not the difference between the acronyms RCRA and CERCLA.
I kicked audit's butt because it wasn't stupid like this. Audit was concept, practices, and ideas. That I can handle. Testing on minute details of what act says what and what date what happened has always irritated me. It's my single biggest grievence against history classes in general.
Grrr...
Gay Civil Disobedience
07 07 09 - 17:26. Category:
Dan Savage makes great points and creates great ideas. One of them, is a "human-scale" act of civil disobedience to present our message to President Obama:
Here's the idea: one gay or lesbian couple—a couple currently denied their rights under DOMA—shows up at the entrance to the White House grounds. A different couple every day. They ask to speak to the president about DOMA. They're refused. They sit down. They refuse to leave. They're arrested, carried away by the police. Couples would be recruited from all over the country, demonstrating that gay marriage isn't just an issue in liberal California or godless New England, and the media in each couple's home city and state would be notified in advance of their arrest. The occasional famous couple—Rosie and Kelli? Ellen and Portia?—would participate to pull in celeb media. But most of the couples who come to D.C. to get arrested would be average folks. The couples would need support, legal and logistical, and we would need someone to organize media outreach and maintain a website. The website would include a photo and profile of each couple that comes to D.C. to get arrested, collect all the press, and be used to recruit couples willing to travel to D.C. and get arrested.
Now here is my idea, blossomed from his idea and turned a little more hostile. It is of course an unrealistic notion. I cannot imagine things getting bad enough that we violate any laws, but the idea is a fun one:
Under DOMA gay individuals are not subject to the same set of civil rights and civil laws as the rest of the country, a violation of the 14th Amendment. We should take this and wield it to our advantage. If we are "special" and the civil liberty of marriage is out of our reach, then the other side of the coin is that we are "special" and outside the reach of civil laws as a general rule.
Go out and commit tiny violations, commit civil disobedience and get fined for misdemeanor charges. Get a speeding ticket, shoplift a candy bar and get caught, sit somewhere you're not allowed to sit and refuse to move, get in trouble for something and then refuse to admit guilt. it's a civil law, and apparently the gay community is outside the equal domain of this these laws. Refuse the guilt and bog down the legal system dealing with the hoop jumping.
They'd probably make our life miserable, but we'd make theirs miserable right back, and I'd hope we'd make a point.
Another dose of stupid terminiology

Parol Evidence - this has nothing to do with a released criminal, that'd make too much sense.
In contract law "parol evidence is a legal rule of contract interpretation that states that extrinsic evidence is not admissible to add to, alter, or vary the terms of a written contract." Basically a final contract needs to be in writing, and any oral agreements before that, not in the contract, are not valid. So I beg you, someone explain what the hell this has to do with parol?
Idemnify - any guesses? I had no idea what it means or could mean.
In contract law it's the idea that an undisclosed principle must compensate, or reimburse, an agent acting on their behalf for reasonable expenses incurred in establishing contracts. Who knew? Idemnify means reimburse. Know what would be a good word to use instead? Reimburse.
Strict Liability - Strict, as in tied down, or carefully enumeriated. Except not. It's "liabilty without fault... It is much more extensive liability than that which would be applicable in most other kinds of bailments (contracts)." So it's not strict, it's wide open. Effectively it's liability for anything occuring while an item is in your posession. I suppose the punishment is strict, so this one isn't too far fetched. But still, it makes me want to shank something.
This is not a rec room
01 07 09 - 21:22. Category:
We share our office building floor with some big Oregon insurance company. They take up the entire floor below us and have wedged 50 people on our floor into the same space we comfortably keep 30 with some room to spare. They're effectively a customer help/call center.
They're pretty gross, some don't bother coming to work put together, apparently the women's bathroom for our floor is trashed every single day. And then there's this recent development:
Sorry about the camera phone quality, I just snapped this when I had the chance. They use this corner of our lobby as their break room. Employees cycle through it throughout the day. Someone had the idea of bringing these chairs, and then keeping magazines out there.
Seriously? This is not a rec room, this is the lobby of a professional business building. It's part of the image our firm presents to visiting clients. That is not space you lease, camp out in, or hang out on the floor chatting. If you want a break room, don't wedge your company in to the space with no room to spare. It's not too polite to be blocking the maintenance closet either.
They also are fans of standing in the lobby outside a side entrance to our office to talk on their phones. They really do make great neighbors.
